So, Dion is a remold and redeco of the Studio Series '86 Kup toy. Five accessories come tightly-wrapped in tissue with tape covering it in two directions-their guns, the energon goodies left over from the previous use of the mold, and Dion's shoulder pads. But, of course that would have bumped the price up a bit. A third toy would have fit in the box easily, if they'd chosen to include one. The toys come attached to a cardboard tray that's arguably too big for just two Deluxes. I think what probably happened was that Hasbro tried to name her "Cybertronian Ariel" but that didn't pass the trademark check, so they just changed the spelling but kept the two-word name. Neither character got an Earth mode, so it seems strange that they would make that distinction. She's actually called "Cybertronian Erial" on the box flaps and instructions. I love the presentation so much.Īriel's name has been changed to Erial for this set, a same-sounding trademark-skirting name to prevent Disney from coming after Hasbro for using the name of the Little Mermaid character. Orion Pax is also visible in the shot, way off in the distance, so you don't get confused and think he's being advertised as part of the set as well. Indeed, the top of the box has tiny illustrations of Megatron and Shockwave and Soundwave soaring through the sky. You've got Dion and Ariel working at their energy storage docks during the Golden Age of Cybertron, staring off into the sky (and Dion is shielding his eyes from the sun), no doubt catching a glimpse of those awesome new flying robots (I think they're called Decepticons or something like that?) appearing over the horizon. The packaging artwork is honestly gorgeous, and it's perfectly in synch with the fiction in which these characters appear. Hasbro weighed in at one point and said Dion was never rebuilt, but they also claimed that Bumblejumper doesn't exist, so. Nobody really knows for sure what became of poor Dion (unlike Orion and Ariel, his color scheme doesn't seem to correspond to any known modern-day Autobot). Orion Pax was reconstructed into Optimus Prime, while Ariel eventually became Elita One. His best friend Dion and his girlfriend Ariel were witness to Megatron's betrayal of Orion, blasting them all and leaving them for dead. Before he was Autobot commander, he was Orion Pax, an unaffiliated blue-collar worker who admired the Decepticons for their strength and flying ability. So for those who don't know, the G1 cartoon episode "War Dawn" features a story in which the Aerialbots travel back in time to witness the birth of Optimus Prime. This set was originally intended as a GameStop exclusive, but it also ended up being made available at the recent San Diego Comic-Con 2023 because, as explained by Hasbro, they wanted to be able to make it available to more people. I wanted to give the Hasbro packaging a chance to dry before I attempted opening it! I didn't even have to cut the tape I just peeled the box apart like a banana peel. However, my box from Hasbro Pulse sat on the porch for a bit until my kids noticed it and brought it inside, and the shipping box was soaking wet. Yesterday we got a big rain storm, which is always nice because it means I can skip watering the lawn.
